Restrictions on School Zone Cell Phone Use

Via: ReleaseWire

Updated 11:26 AM CDT, Mon, October 28,2019

A part of Florida’s new laws aimed at texting while driving went into effect during October. It is now illegal for drivers to use their phone while driving through a construction, work, or school zone. This means drivers cannot hold their phones while they are in these zones or driving through them.

Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/28/2019 -- The new laws mean drivers may need some time to adjust. For example, parents with school-age children may be used to using their phones while they await their child in the pick-up line, to communicate with them for example. Unless the parent is using a hands-free solution, holding the phone while in the pick-up line would be illegal.

Police officers are issuing warnings to drivers versus tickets to increase awareness of the new law and so drivers can become acclimated. However, this will change on January 1, 2020, which is when officers will start to write tickets. Citations will start at $60 for first-time offenders and it will also add three points to a driver's license.
