Wichita, KS -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/22/2018 -- Attorney Kari D. Coultis, founder of Coultis Law, LLC, has completed a course on Special Education Advocacy at William and Mary Law School. The William and Mary Law School uses the tuition from the course to help support their Special Education Advocacy clinic that offers services to families at no charge.

"I chose to take this specialized training to better serve my clients in caring for their loved ones with special education needs," said Coultis.

An expert in special needs education law, Coultis has extensive, first-hand experience with the issues and situations that parents can encounter with schools and other organizations when they have a special needs child. The challenges of raising a special needs child don't abate as they mature. Parents are often unaware of their legal rights and the options available to them for educating their child.

One of the biggest fears of parents caring for a child with special needs is what will happen to that child when they're no longer able to care for them. Coultis' extensive training and education enables her to help individuals with guardianships, trusts and conservatorships for special needs planning.

With a guardianship, parents can designate a legal guardian for their child in the event that they're no longer able to make decisions about the child's welfare. A conservatorship is similar, and also involves distribution of assets and finances on behalf of the child.

Coultis can help with special needs trusts that provide financial assistance for the special needs individual, while enabling them to maintain governmental benefits that include Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security and Medicaid. People are living longer and government benefits are inadequate for allowing an individual with special needs to live comfortably or obtain the services they need. There's also no guarantee that those government services will survive and be available in the future.

Parents want to ensure that their child will be educated, cared for compassionately, and their needs met if they die or are unable to do so themselves. The Special Education Advocacy course at William and Mary Law School provides Coultis with additional tools and knowledge of special needs law to help clients ensure that children and adults are cared for throughout their lives in the way that best fits each individual's unique needs.
